We went to a brocante at the weekend. Last year we came away from same with a faintly moth-eaten badger who now takes pride of place in the conservatory, wearing my daughter’s old school hat. Strangely, he reminds me of my husband.

The girls bought two small furry things that trundle around muttering and squeaking to themselves and which may have to be taken away and drowned fairly soon. My daughter-in-law acquired a whole new wardrobe for under €20. She’s just escaped from Australia and left all her clothes behind. And I got a ring. Because why not.

Then we all drove to the top of the mountain behind the house to see the comet Neowise. It will next pass through our skies in 6’800 years, so, unless my Transylvanian roots live up to their reputation, I reckoned it’d be wise to catch it now.
